Looking like a series of children’s building blocks piled one atop another, these stones are made of basalt, which, when it cooled some 6.5 million years ago, formed these (usually) octagonal steps known as the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim. When seen from above, the surface is something like the shape of a honeycomb, with pillars of slightly different heights, facilitating easy hopping from one to another. We are lucky that the pounding waves of the Atlantic have not succeeded in wearing away what is such a unique geological phenomenon.
